FIVE EVIDENCE THAT THE TOYOTA COROLLA NOT ALWAYS IS A CAR BLAND

Sports versions with all-wheel drive rally and even coupes to drift part of the model history

The Toyota Corolla is among the few models sold in the world to complete five decades in the market. Presented in Japan in 1966, the car quickly gained buyers and admirers the world over 11 generations, thanks to features such as durability (no missing copies intact after thousands of kilometers traveled), comfort and good acceptance in the used market.
If left over qualities are not lacking critics ready to belittle the poor Corolla, being crossed the car as a bland model made for people who do not value the driving pleasure.
But it is misleading to think that the Corolla has only versions without salt. A coupe tailored to shine in the drift to a station wagon with quite different from the sedan spirit, separated some models that will detractors review their concepts regarding the sales champion. It has up sedan with Lotus engine in the middle!
The Corolla Levin (better known as AE86, in reference to the factory catalog chassis code) was born in 1983 to be a sportier version of the fifth generation of the model. Low weight (950 kg to 970 kg), rear wheel drive and weight distribution between the axles 50:50, the car fell into the graces of the gearheads.
Along with her “almost twin brother” Sprinter Trueno (which differed by hidden headlamps in place of fixed), the AE86 became a drifting icon, easily found in sport competitions today.
Nicknamed hachi-roku (or “eighty-six” in Japanese), the AE86 became an icon of Japanese pop culture by appearing in the manga / anime Initial D, resulting in a significant appreciation of the Levin / Trueno in the local market used.
Motoring was never very beach Corolla, but the car has a history in the competitions. In the late 90s, Toyota put the Corolla hatch to compete in the World Rally Championship (WRC). Not to make ugly, the model gained traction on the four wheels and a Celica turbo 2.0 engine greatly modified.
It worked: the car played three seasons (1997-1999) and won the title in 1999. Away from the category since Toyota prepares his return to the WRC for 2017. The Corolla sedan also figure in several categories of tourism around the world, as the brands Petrobras Cup. In the Brazilian category since 2011, Toyota won the title in 2012 along with Full Time Sports and Ricardo Maurício team.
