The longevity of the propellant (and its parts) depends on simple and easy to adopt measures
To avoid early retirement of your car’s engine, simply follow a simple maintenance routine and adopt some behaviors that will save you lots of money in the medium and long term.
Most of the time, cars give clear signals that something is not going well – and their health depends on their attention. There is no magic: engines live longer if the owner is careful. Here’s what you can do for him.
Take it easy on the first few kilometers
In cars just left the dealership, keep the rotation low for the first 1,000 kilometers. Anticipate gear changes (do not exceed 3,500 rpm), vary the speed and make progressive accelerations.
This story of engine softening by force does not work – though there is a community of people who believe in the Chuck Norris method of break-in.
Give preference to the CARS FOR ALL TYPES version: in the period between 1,000 and 1,500 km, drive smoothly and stay off the highway. Only then face the road, even for safety.
The brakes also need initial care so that there is seating between the pads and discs. For the engine and brakes, the first miles are key to a long and happy life.
Do not heat the engine before starting to rotate.
When leaving in the morning or when the car is cold, you do not need to spend a few minutes idling. Prefer this routine: Get in the car and start the engine, attach the belt and check the seat and mirrors settings. Okay – those 30 seconds are enough and your car is ready to start rolling. But it will still be cold. Turn it gently until the engine reaches the optimum operating temperature.
Avoid sudden accelerations
Speeding up in traffic like you’re on a quarter of a mile every time the traffic light opens will not help you get there faster. But it is the shortest way to anticipate a stop at the workshop. Being abrupt on the accelerator is one of the most harmful habits for the health of the automobile.
In traffic, the engine tends to work very hot and this type of driving further increases the set temperature. It overloads the cooling system, joints and belts, for example.
Filters (air and oil) are inexpensive. Grinding is expensive
Saving on those two filters is the worst decision you can make. Replace the oil filter every time the fluid runs out – no toggle switch yes, no switch. It is a cheap piece, considering its importance in the good functioning of the propeller.
The same goes for the air filter: replace it no matter what. No “hitting an air”, vacuuming, washing. In financial jargon, it is what is called the “nut economy”.
Choose the oil as if it were wine
Bad wine gives a headache. Doubtful oil too. If the manufacturer recommends synthetic oil (usually more expensive), use synthetic oil. Do not mix with mineral oil. Prefer younger generations of the fluid, with SL class detergency at least.
Save your money: Modern, quality oils, do not need additives. Follow the manual and anticipate fluid changes if you run for long periods in severe regimes (such as traffic or polluted / dusty areas).
Get rid of excessive weight
When facing a mountain climb on foot, the lighter you are, the better. Adopt the same procedure for your automobile. Take out of the trunk everything that is of no use, as well as in the glove compartment and other pockets inside. Is your roof rack empty? Leave it in the garage.
Additional weight requires more engine power. Machines are the opposite of our bodies: the more effort they make, the shorter the life. When installing a hitch, make sure the car is approved to load a wagon and of course check the permissible weight.
Use the transmission wisely
The way you use the gearbox has a direct influence on engine performance. High speeds increase consumption and noise. Making the changes in the red range – the turning limit – will, at all times, shorten the life of the components. High speed marches also do not do valves well.
Always use the ideal gear for the speed you are in and also consider the slope of the track. Strictly, get down in the same gear that you would use to climb the track.
Finally, transmission is not a brake. You can count on the brake-motor effect on slopes – and you should do that – but do not slow down the car by using the gears.
Read the manual and perform preventive maintenance
That little book that accompanies the vehicle, forgotten in the bottom of the glove compartment, is his ally. It needs to be read. It describes the maintenance intervals and items to be checked according to the mileage of the car.
Natural wear parts need replacing: candles and cables, drums, belts, bearings, fluids – keep all of this in order and your engine can work quietly even when the odometer has six digits high.
Take your car to travel
Short excerpts are the hardest for vehicles. The urban walk-and-go, traffic and that little Sunday morning to the corner bakery do a motor damage-as cholesterol is bad for the heart.
Exercises do well: go to the road with the powerful. Walk at constant speed, vary accelerations, and rotate with high turn (within propeller limits). This helps to rid the inner chamber and exhaust system of soot and other contaminants that accumulate in the routine use of severe cycle.
